The quote is from a 1973 interview, so as far as I can tell he wasn't repeating what he'd read in an incorrect biography. I assume he's repeating what Buddy told him.

I don't know if this is true or not. For all I know, he was swimming in cash. But if it isn't true, why did Waylon believe it? Why would Buddy tell him he was broke?
