Mulligan. I had the pleasure to attend Kevin Montgomery's "Songs In The Sun" guitar/songwriting workshop on the island of Crete several years ago where Tommy Allsup was doing the Guitar workshop and that was awesome, him showing all us 'students' how he came up with and played those licks on Heartbeat, Whishing, It's So Easy etc.
He said that in the studio Buddy wanted something 'Latin' for Heartbeat so he came up with those famous licks and as far as Wishing was concerned, he just ad-libbed or winged it playing all those fast licks down the high end of the fretboard.
He wasn't happy with the result and told Buddy he could do much better next take, but Buddy & Norman said there was no need as that take was the one.
So while Buddy & Norman might be credited with the final result, these songs would be nothing without Tommy and the other guys creative input.
Tommy showed me how to play a neat solo that he used whenever he played Raining In My Heart & I committed to memory and hardly a days go by without me playing that or the other solo's he taught us all. A wonderful guy and sorely missed...as for Kevin Montgomery, another great guy. I haven't enough time to talk about all the stories about him, his music and his Tours...but a guy who can play a gig in everyone of the 50 USA States in 50 days, and he's done it a few times, is something else!
