He laughs as he sings "But we both know you were mean as hell." I wouldn't read too much into it; it's just a friend saying "Ha! In death you've become perfect, but if only they knew what you were capable of!"

Buddy was 22. He was a kid... a talented one, though. I say that as a 32 year old who looks back at myself at 22 and thinks, "Wow." LOL. I'm sure in 10 years I'll look back at me at 32 and think the same thing! My point is, Buddy tends to have been viewed as a figurative saint through the years. No doubt he was a great guy -- everyone says that -- but I'm sure he had a little fun, bent the rules, and just generally got up to the kind of things 22 year olds get up to.

It's just Waylon's tongue-in-cheek way of saying, "We had some good times!"

It's probably my favourite line in the song. It's so... real. (I also love "Lord, you shoulda heard the music and all the changes it's gone through, but the funny thing is lately it keeps easing back to you...")
