 I don't play, and wasn't around in the 1960s, but most local musicians I've talked to who are now in their 70s name the Beatles as their inspiration for picking up a guitar in the first place, though they often name others for influencing their actual playing style, frequently citing jazz and blues guitarists. As rockers go, I've heard Link Wray and Chuck Berry cited more than the Ventures, possibly because it was easier to emulate the sound of one guitarist rather than three.
