Dale,

Oh, we're absolutely on the same page. What would make the most sense would be for MEH to appoint somebody who is extremely familiar with Buddy's music to manage the licensing of his image and legacy. She'll still hold the rights and will make all of the profits, and I'm sure such a person's wage would be covered with the first few months of increased sales and such.

(Funnily enough, the wrestling example I used ended up going down that exact path, and there has been some super cool merchandise and unreleased footage unearthed as a result.)

Buddy Holly, as a business, won't pull in the kind of money that Elvis or The Beatles would -- and a degree of that is due to years of mismanagement -- but he has an iconic image and a strong catalogue of music. As hokey as it would be, the horn-rimmed glasses could have been used as a major marketing opportunity through the years. It could have been a logo to rival Elvis' famous autograph or The Beatles' iconic logo and font.

The fact that there has virtually never been an official Buddy Holly T-shirt is absolutely absurd.

A blurb from the official Buddy Holly website: "The memory of Buddy Holly is still very much alive. With new recordings, a hologram tour and beautiful merchandise, this is the place to learn about Buddy’s ongoing contribution to Rock ‘n’ Roll."

Beautiful merchandise? There is one item. It's an expensive watch. The whole website looks like it took about ten minutes to make. It should have a detailed biography, rare photos, a full discography, all sorts of stuff. Instead it's literally one page.

An artist of Buddy's stature should have an online store that has, say, 5-10 T-shirts/shirts, a few hats, novelties like shot glasses, a few posters, etc. Sure, many of his fans are getting on in years (at 33 I'm probably on the younger end of the spectrum!), so make merchandise that suits that demographic. A nice polo shirt with the glasses and Buddy's signature would be awesome to wear on the golf course. (Okay, I was thinking of myself there too :-))

There are celebrities not even remotely as well known as Buddy who have swathes of cool merchandise available. Buddy Holly fans can't even buy an official T-shirt. It's just sad.
