A very intriguing question.

I have never read anything describing a strong interest in
current western bop and hillbilly music by Dean.

My guess is that he might have been into the early days of Be Bop jazz, and possibly some R'n'B.

His circle of friends would all have been pretty hip and aware, so there is a chance he at least heard of Elvis.
