Thank you for your post: It saved me the trouble of having to post it myself...

I like The Big Bopper well enough (not as much as a lot of you all do though I'm sure), but I get so tired of the whole "He invented the music video" bit, because it's just not true...

His idea may have been to use such films for television broadcast, but the idea of filmed musical performance clips existed well before 1958 and The Big Bopper's clips...

In addition to the "soundies" you mentioned, I'd also argue that song clips from musical movies are also an early form of "music video"-Think Judy Garland miming "Over the Rainbow in 'The Wizard of Oz' for example, or the Western films featuring "singing cowboys", and the like... All are musical performance clips, so The Big Bopper didn't have a new idea, just had a new market in mind for the same style of clips.

And folks argue that he coined the term 'music video' and that that makes him influential.. he may have coined the term, I have no idea, but coming up with a new name for something that was already out there doesn't mean he came up with a new creation/invention...
