Mike, yes you are wrong to a certain extent...as I was in previous posts. Although I initially understood the "change-over" in the Sound Recording Copyright law to be 1st January 1957, I have since been advised that the 1956 act, bizarrely, came into effect on 1st June 1957.
So, in the UK, everything recorded on 31st May 1957 and earlier counts its 50 year protection from the recording date, while those recorded 1st June 1957 and later enjoy protection for 50 years after release.
Remember, this isn't just for British recordings and releases - this is for worldwide recordings whether they were released in the UK or not!
In 1989, new legislation came into force in an attempt to harmonise UK copyright law with our EU partners (including Spain), however I understand that most partners felt at the time it was more sensible to make the "change-over" the end of the year rather than 1st June.
Therefore, it seems, that for the rest of Europe (not sure about the UK) it will be business as usual and they may potentially issue any 1957 recordings after 31/12/07. Things will start getting awkward with the 1958 recordings...
