 I haven't joined in the discussions on this subject before, because I hadn't heard any of the tracks. But for Christmas, an aunt gave me a double CD called "Rock Around The Clock" (she knows I like Rock 'n' Roll, bless her.) I already have most of the tracks on it, so I more or less ignored it, until tonight. I noticed that it had on it "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly (& the Picks). I knew the Picks were not on the original release, so curiosity overcame me and I put it on.

I just can't believe it. I am absolutely gobsmacked.

The dubbed on vocal backing is just unbelievably bad. The singing is not very good, but the eq. is so bad that the dubbed vocals and Buddy's vocal grate against each other and distort Buddy's. The mix is dreadful; Buddy's voice seems to come in and out, as though the mixer was trying to highlight the backing vocals. The arrangement of the dubbed tracks is so very poor; in here and there and not elsewhere....there is too much echo... it's vile.

It is the musical equivalent of drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa with a pencil.

I have read here on this board that John Pickering is a nice guy and we should remember his anonymous contribution to "The Chirping Crickets" and so on. Well, if he is, he should pull this abomination from open sale.

It's a disgrace. I have heard some bad records over the years, but this track takes the "honour" of being the worst. How could this be allowed to happen? Can't something be done? As was pointed out in another thread, younger people hearing this rubbish for the first time will think this is what Buddy Holly is !!

That will be a tragedy.
