Yes, HK, that may well be true, but those original dubs were far superior in quality to this trash, and at least it seems that Norman Petty made some effort to choose which songs actually benefitted from the augmentation. "Peggy-Sue" quite clearly stands up as it is without backing vocals, and even if the b.v. were good, they would still be unnecessary.
The more I think about it, the more outrageous it becomes. The Picks were no more than a random group of session backing singers brought in to do a specific job. I’m fairly sure that their contract with Norman for doing those backing vocals back in ’57 did not include a clause giving them the right to abuse ALL of Buddy Holly’s recordings in the future !
Robert Redford had a bit part in the Marlon Brando film “The Chase” before he became famous. Does he therefore have the right to take all Brando’s films and splice in a couple of scenes of himself ?
What if James Burton decided to overdub a few licks on to the records of all the people he had backed a couple of times.
Just because I visited a house at some time doesn’t give me the right to go back later and re-decorate it !! It’s madness. The very concept is bizarre.
In another thread, I whimsically mooted the prospect of sampling Buddy Holly’s entire oeuvre so that I could invent a brand new Buddy Holly song. It was a light hearted remark, not meant to be taken seriously, just a comment on the possibilities of digital technology; but hey…. if the Picks think they have the right to destroy Buddy Holly songs, why shouldn’t I make new ones, however bad they may sound. (I’m not going to, by the way, just in case anyone is worried).
I can’t believe that the record company that owns “Peggy-Sue”, (and all the others) can’t sue the Picks for this. The Picks must have a really serious gripe against Buddy Holly if they are prepared to destroy their own reputation in order to destroy his. It’s musical suicide bombing.
