 Sometimes a track can work with and without overdubs. I'm specifically thinking of Rick Nelson's "Believe What You Say," available back in the day with and without the Jordanaires' backing vocals. I believe one was released as a single, and the other, on the album. In this case, though, the artist was around to give his consent to both versions. And both versions are comfortably couched in his recorded legacy.

It's a shame The Picks overdubs don't simply exist as the intriguing novelty "what if" project for which they were intended. I think many of us would have been able to enjoy these recordings in the novelty context if they had gone no further than a fan-club type of circulation. The idea that people are being given their first exposure to Buddy Holly through these recordings is very sad to me. I think many of the newer overdubs get in the way of the freshness of the originals, and may prevent people from wanting to dig deeper into Buddy's catalog.
