 I read somewhere that Petty didn't like the idea of men crying and, apart from "Words of Love", I think this is the first song that he didn't put his name to. Maybe Buddy insisted they record it, against Petty's advice, and so "The King Of Clovis" left his name off the credits (that must have hurt!) and recorded an inferior master in a fit of pique. This was the last Holly/Crickets song that Petty recorded - all other recordings being demos, other peoples records or Holly songs recorded in New York - with one exception, Reminiscing, which Buddy gave to King Curtis, and that kept Petty's name off it.
Was Lonesome Tears the beginning of the end?
