I think if you have an artist like the Carpenters, known for their orchestral arrangements, and you have isolated vocal tracks just waiting for an accompaniment, it ought to work well. It's when you have existing orchestral arrangements, like "True Love Ways," or some of the Orbison recordings, that the lush arrangements seem so redundant and unnecessary. (For the record, I enjoyed much of the first Orbison album.) Adding them to rockers like Elvis' "Burning Love," and Buddy's "Peggy Sue" is like painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.
