I respect Mr. Fogerty, and I am a lifelong fan (since '69).

Having not read his book as yet, I don't know if he was misquoted by you or his editor, but as you know, the Nashville recording of That'll Be The Day is not an out take and was in fact officially released during Buddy's lifetime on the Decca album of the same name. Mr. Fogerty is wrong in that regard.

I guess what you are saying is that Mr.Fogerty actually projected his own phobia regarding out takes onto certain recordings of Buddy's, either because they were substandard in performance or audio quality, in his opinion.

Many Holly fans would disagree with Mr. Fogerty about the merit of those recordings, even the worst sounding demo's etc.

In Mr. Fogerty's own career, he famously is said to have destroyed the master tapes to his solo album "hoodoo" after it was rejected by his label.

As a fan, I find at least 4 of the songs on that album (which survives in low quality bootlegs) to be excellent, so the artist and fan can have honest differences of opinion.
