Buddy's death was unfortunately the biggest boost his career could have had, it made him a token icon of the fifties. See black rimmed glasses and what do you think of? His records were not charting and Valens was supposedly the crowd pleaser on the Winter Dance Party. Had Buddy come out with more string sessions (as he did say rock & roll was on its way out) we might have ended up with another fluff artist on Liberty like Vee or The Crickets material. Chart stats tell a different story.

If Buddy had not toured England (and had his massive UK following) would Buddy be just another obscure rocker to US music buffs? Again, this is just one opinion and every Buddy fan has their own, likely more favorable to their main man.
