***North Star Dragway***

The early birds rolled into Denton's Northstar Dragway late Friday nite for the TPSA event. The weather wasn't clear or cool but the track looked killer and looks weren't deceiving. The last car with slicks hit the lanes about midnite and shucked the rear end in a testimony about how the track was hooking. We all went to bed dreaming how good it would be in the am.

Saturday am and it's warm, overcast and misting. The track had seen a small shower and some puddles were visible. We decided to walk the track and even with the damp surface, it would try to pull your shoes off out to the 330'!. It was obvious we would have some outstanding track to work with.

Larry Croft and his track team prepped the track and the first TT was around 6:30 pm. The first pair down the track was Hubbard in Crownover's Cavalier and Crownover in Hubbard's familiar 'Bird...what???..it's a long story. Anyway DH's .410 4.85 was just barely better than Clint's .417 4.86 hit and the rest of qualifying was just as exciting. When the smoke cleared, Richard Otwell (Team O aka Big Bad Wolf) stood atop the heap with a new TPSA record 4.647 @ 150.65 with his new NRC bullet. Pigford, the points leader, was right there with a 4.66 from his newest Reher-Morrison piece.

1st round had Larry Pearce draw Rick Hanson. Rumor has it Pearce has "little Wolf", Otwell's old NRC motor between the rails but he had trouble in TT's with the car not shifting and didn't make a clean pass. He had no trouble on this pass as his 4.67 moved him into the 2nd round and also made him the 3rd member of the TPSA 4.60 club. The Hanson's black 'Vette was a little off the pace it displayed at Evadale but no reports on what the issues were. 2nd pair saw Crownover advance over Randy Elliott's 'Vette, and Eddie Conrad advanced when Joe Pigford turned on the red lite by .005 and went to the box! Conrad collected the Bounty that was posted on the points leader and Pearce's crew removed the "Here Piggy, Piggy" shoe polish lettering from the rear window of their Cavalier. #1 qualifier, Otwell, drew the runner-up at the last event, Merv Davis driving the Winscott family's, GTO. Davis experienced some sort of engine gremlin and Otwell advanced with a clean 4.65. David Hubbard drew the odd lot bye into round 2.

Round 2 and the giant killer, Conrad, would get another tough opponent in Otwell. Conrad was out first but the big bad Wolf huffed, & puffed and came storming by to send the "Dude" to the trailer. Pearce drew DH in a match, that on paper, wasn't close. The newest member of Team O (Pearce), had a big performance advantage but we don't race 'em on paper. When Larry left the big red hangin' on the tree (-.010) DH got a free pass into the semi's. Crownover drew the odd lot bye.

Semi's and the Hill Country Boyz pits were jumping. Seems DH heard a "clunk" when he shut down after the previous run. The Cavalier was on the jacks and A. Hubbard, Donald the "Boxman" Hughes, Crownover, A. Cole (a friend from Galveston that had driven up for the race) were looking for the cause. They repaired a loose convertor bolt and everything was good. Since Crownover and Hubbard had both drawn a bye previously, Otwell would get the single and the team mates would have to run each other. Friendship's end at the stage beam and DH would move into the final after a close race with his buddy and car owner who had helped him get ready for the round! Maybe not a good idea to put the car owner on the trailer.....LOL. The dew and heavy moisture were coming fast as Otwell completed his bye run. A quick conference between the finalists, Hubbard & Otwell, and track management resulted in postponing the final until May 31st when the TPSA will return to North Star. Congrats and thanks to all of the TPSA teams, families, and crew that made the first trip "up north" a success, and a bunch of fun. And don't forget Wes Strom from www.nitroart.com for keeping the pits lively and taking those cool shots.

Thanks again to Rich Witkovski, Larry Croft, the entire staff of North Star, and those North Texas fans. Make your plans to be back on May 31st for more TPSA action.

[> LP went 4.63 over at Kennedale before coming up to Denton - but the dang Cav tried to break itself in the trailer ride to Denton! Fixed the shifting problem with a mouse "click" in the proper place. Welcome to Team "O" Larry - now we just gotta get some MAROON on that car! -- Team "O", 03/31/08 11:30pm
