Making the use of any word illegal would be creating a law impossible to enforce. Plus, I do agree with the point brought up on the show that by trying to forbid the use of any word tends to empower it further. There are words that can be used hatefully that are deeply rooted in history and culture. One such word is a derogatory word used towards woman that starts with "cu". If one goes back to the 1500's you will note that this word actually referred to a particular part of the female anatomy (at the time it was pronounced "quainte"). The hurtful use of the word reduces a woman to no more than this part of the anatomy, and seems to associate something dirty or inferior by it. Likewise, the hateful use of the 'n' word reduces African Americans to simply a color and every derogatory association ever made toward that color. Many woman hate the 'cu' word in any of its uses. However, I do know of lesbians who have chosen to reclaim the word and use it to empower themselves, much like that one student explained that African Americans reclaiming the 'n' word as their own.

Please do not think that I am comparing the two or making light of the 'n' word. I know of it's history and it's pain. And though I can never know of it from personal experience because I am white, I find it interesting that some people even feel that the very debate of the useage of the word is so wrong.

What I mean by that is that Danny was not using the term in any way derogatory. He merely broached it as a topic of debate, and was informed that the very debate of the word was inappropriate especially given that he is white.

Personally, I don't like the word and it makes me uncomfortable no matter who uses it. However, I am not going to ask that it be removed from the english language or be made forbidden by law. It is by debate that we grow. Yes, I am uncomfortable with the word. How many generations of children will be born before the word is made numb and it no longer causes the pain, hurt, and anger that it causes now? Will that day ever come?
