Of Marla and Steven's response? I dunno. I think most people can relate to being smeared with a broad brush and degraded at the same time. We have all been belittled at one time or another, frequently by a personal remark from someone who knows us. We know how that feels. We know what it feels like to be lumped in with others on the basis of some ridiculous reason. To me, being called THAT WORD has less of an effect than the cutting remark from someone who knows me. If the best a person can do is yell "nigger" at me, they are saying "I haven't got a clue as to what makes you tick or how to hurt you verbally! And I don't have much in the way of powers of observation or originality!"

I don't think blacks have some special insight into the nature of the word because it's aimed at them.

I have never used the word and

Well...I'm an Unhyphenated-American. Oh, well.
