I'm sure that the way you describe teachers is true for some. But those are the bad ones. As you said: "The kids are failing miserably". Any teachers who aren't working hard outside the classroom to prepare for the classroom will probably have students who are failing miserably.

My brother is a teacher (grade school). He gets to school two hours before school starts and usually doesn't leave until the evening. He's won awards, and the students and their parents love him. He always has had part-time jobs and summer jobs to support his family. The school dstrict he works in is quite affluent. He cannot afford to live there so he drives 40 minutes from a town he can afford to live in and raise his family.

I have an elementary degree. I taught one year, but quit because I realized that as much as I love children, I am not a good teacher, nor am I organized enough to be even an adequate teacher.

If your characterization of your friends who are teachers is true, maybe they should get out the profession. They are obviously doing a disservice to their students.
