There were two art teachers during my time at Scarborough (1946 through 1957). The first was Philip Held, very tall and sandy-haired. The second was Donald Sutphin, who became quite an artist and has a web page (or had one, last time I looked) indicating that he lives (lived) in Italy. I have a painting of his that my mother bought from him at one of the Scarborough Fairs (fundraising events held in the 1950s), a very sad, Kathe Kollwitz style mother and child titled "Grief." I think a lot of his painting was like that, although he was not.

All I know.

Thanks, Merry:

Naturally, all and any names that are mentioned immediately teas my memory into thinking "Oh, yes! That sounds like it."

I guess it's old age just jumping at any familiar syllable.

Thanks again.

Gary -

I came in 3rd Grade, in 1953. Miss Daniels was the class teacher and our classroom was on the second floor on the west wing of the Studio. Behind our room, above Major Price's shop, was the Art Room. The teacher was James (Sully) Sullivan. He had long dark hair, I think a mustache or beard, and he smoked a pipe. He left in 1955 to accompany Thom Schuller to the International College in Beirut Lebanon and spent the rest of his teaching career there.

They actually left at the end of the 1959 or 1960 school year. I know Thom Schuller was installed as President at the IC in 1961.
