Craig,

What you say seems surprising though without more info. it's a bit hard to judge. How long does your 40-50 mile ride take you? How hard are you riding? The energy requirements for a steady 40-50 miles compared to 'blasting it', intervals etc. will be quite different! Are you eating adequately before you go out: ideally a fairly carb-dense meal up to 3hrs b4 (muesli in the mornings, pasta in the afternoons!)depending on how hard the ride is going to be? I would have thought sufficient pre-ride nutrition along with what you currently take on board ought to be sufficient for 40-50 miles, though if there were any mountains involved things might be different. But I don't recall their being any around Rugby last time I was there!

For longer rides you might want to use energy drinks in addition to the gels etc. Dried fruit also works well, as do banana's, jelly babies, kendal mint cake etc. But if you are going to be on the bike for a long time you will really want to take something with protein in it to stave off the hunger pangs. In which case some small sandwiches might be appropriate e.g. chicken and avocado, chicken and apple etc. but no doorsteps!

another thing you could do would be to borrow/rent a power meter from someone (Bob Tobin springs to mind for the latter!) and see from that a pretty precise estimate of how many calories you burn on a given ride and work backwards from there...
