Firstly, you seem to have got hold of an A-level book, not a GCSE book; this question is too hard for GCSE. The worst you would get at GCSE is 'What problems faced Lenin 1918-24?'

Secondly, thank you for asking this question, because it allows me to illustrate a point I make again and again to my pupils - YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER.
It is a big mistake to think that every question is a new set of facts and ideas you need to remember seaparately.
In fact, if you have appropriated the information on www.johndclare.net and/or your textbooks/notes, you know everything you need to answer almost ANY question you will be asked.

The information is there - it's just a matter or re-organising it in your head to plan out the answer to this particular essay.

SO:
1. Look at
http://www.johndclare.net/Russ2.htm and http://www.johndclare.net/Russ3.htm
YOU KNW THAT the Russia Lenin took over was backward, weak and ruined by WWI. This was a problem for him, and you can easily chunter on about the underlying weaknesses for a paragraph.

2. Look at http://www.johndclare.net/Russ6.htm
YOU KNOW what HUGE changes Lenin was trying to make to bring in a truly Communist society, and the vast work there was to be done. Surely you can write a paragraph explaining how the sheer size of the task was a problem.

3. Look at the Causes of the Civil War on http://www.johndclare.net/Russ7.htm
There you will find THREE more difficulties Lenin faced, which caused him to have to face a vicious Civil War. You can write a long paragraph explaining how all this was a major problem facing him.

4. Look at http://www.johndclare.net/Russ8.htm which tells you about the Kronstadt mutiny
Which surely you can make into another paragraph - how much of a problem was it when even his most enthusiastic supporters were pushed into rebellion!

So can you see how, using information WHICH YOU ALREADY KNEW, you can quickly patch together an essay with four good ideas (a paragraoh per idea). All you have to remember then is to PEE every paragraph (particularly, remembering to EXPLAIN HOW each thing was a problem for Lenin, which is easy enough if you remember to do it).

Even if you INSIST on thinking about the A-level question on Lenin's economic policy, the answer will be much the same four points - but you will have to direct your explanations explicitly and solely to how they made the economy a problem.
