No - 'betrayed' is correct!
But in your posting you should have:
1. used a colon, not a semi-colon, after 'said' and 'read'.
2. put both the cited 'statements' in inverted commas.
3. included a space before the em-dash as well as after it.
4. strictly, have used the perfect not the present tense of the verb: 'read (ie 'This statement should have read:').
5. 'Shouldn't' is not incorrect, but is casual - 'Should it not?' would have been better.
People in glasshouses shouldn't throw stones.
