Hitler had Chamberlain over a barrel in the Sudetenland. There was nothing AT ALL Chamberlain could do to stop Hitler doing whatever he wanted. Czechoslovakia was right next to Germany in the centre of Europe, miles from the sea. How could Britain help Czechoslovakia? Chamberlain knew it - he wrote to his sister: 'you only have to look at a map to see that there is nothing we can do to help Czechoslovakia'. If Chamberlain ahd stuck his neck out and promised to defend the Sudetenland, Hitler would have marched in and Britain would have looked stupid.
As it was, the fact that Chamberlain, negotiating with a megalomaniac, managed to drag something which people could call 'peace with honour' out of this no-win situation, says a lot for just what a brilliant politician he was.
