Wrong on every count. People talk about Chamberalin as if he was some kind of genial, half-wit uncle. In fact, here was a man who had risen through the political ranks - IN THE 1930s!!! - to become Prime Minister. There is no way he was soft, naive or easily deluded. As for publicity-seeking, the press then were just as intrusive and story-pursuing then as they are now - Chamberlain was the victim, not the perpetrator, of the press feeding-frenzy (if anything, he was ill-at-ease with the new media - film in those days).
No. Anyone who listens honestly to Chamberlain's speeches (whether he was wrong in appeasing Hitler or not) must surely admit that here was a GENUINE man, who sincerely wanted peace, and was prepared to show human trust in the promise of another to achieve it.
It was Hitler who was not a gentleman, not Chamberlain.
