Subject: Leadership undermined by growth of socialism

The trauma of WW1 accelerated the growth of "people power" that was the main characteristic of 20th century history. In the allied nations socialism was not identified with national pride as was the case in the axis powers. Rather, a growing tyranny of the collective turned our so called leaders into apologists. Labour politicians believed that fighting another war would only enhance the fortunes of the already rich and was therefore not in the interests of English Socialists.
Given this domestic backdrop, the policy of appeasement abroad was just a logical extension of the Conservative governments fight for political survival on the national front.
