My post is for the “lurkers”. It is for the average person loving this breed and owning one or more Cane Corsos.
What were your thoughts when you saw a Corso for the first time? The size and body structure had to intrigue you. The enormity of the head, the shape of the muzzle, the thick, muscular neck, the set of the eyes - the overall power the dog! Isn’t this what we purchased? Isn’t this what we wanted when we bought a pup? We wanted a MASTIFF didn’t we?
Take a good look at your Corso because if this “newly revised” standard is passed, you will never again see a Corso that resembles what you fell in love with. They will be shorter, lighter, smaller and undershot. People won’t even realize it’s a mastiff. It won’t be the same type of dog that is now laying on your couch or at your feet right at this moment.
All those out there with a sizable Corso will not be able to show their dog that they paid to show. They will not be able to breed their dog that they paid to breed. You will have to tell those inquiring about your Corso that although you love your Corso, paid a lot of money for him and he looks good, he does not fit the breed standard. And then, by all means, explain why!
Tell them that your breed club had some phantom board member(s) that changed the standard but they wouldn’t tell you why. No one would take credit for it. I don’t know about you, but if I worked on something that I was proud of, I would take credit for it and be able to defend my actions.
We as non-members should have a voice in this. We make up the majority of Corso owners. If it wasn’t for us, the Corso wouldn’t be as popular as it is in the first place. We are the ones that LOVE the breed the way it is now. We don’t want it changed to suit the egos and pocketbooks of a few breeders.
The question you all should ask yourself is this….if we voted to change the standard in 2003, why did they give us 2 weeks to send in our vote? It’s been said that several people haven’t even received their ballot, yet you don’t see the club posting a blank form on the Internet to make sure their vote counts!!! What does that say to you? Let’s not forget that the votes are all going to the President’s home. The CCAA is the largest Cane Corso in the United States and I am certain they could afford to hire an independent party to count the votes for such an important event as this. What does that say to you?
Stand up and speak out! We are going to have to protect this breed that we love or there won’t be a breed left.
