if his neck is too far forward when it is at your thigh, how is he supposed to see you with it behind your thigh.... heel position is shoulder/neck is at your thigh. They want them looking at you, personally I don't want a dog cranked around eyeballing me, but I do want their attention on me for the most part. Forging is when the shoulders get too far forward of your thigh - it is a usefulness thing - the dog should be able to pay attention to you without having to be turned around find you and also to be in such a position where you can easily see where he is - where he isn't walking you, but you are walking him - and that bumping into you shit, well, unacceptable to me. Maybe hurting your elbow with corrections could simply indicate the dog doesn't understand where heel position is and needs to understand that long before going off leash. I have found for decades that people take their dogs off leash way too soon; it doesn't seem to be much different in schutzhund I guess. The dog needs to understand and be 110% long before he is ever allowed to learn he can make up his own rules. What I was always taught was, as with a chain training collar, a prong training collar should never have to be used often to make a 'hard' correction. I was working with training a dog entirely off lead in a controlled situation, and it worked pretty good within limitations, but it isn't fast at all and it takes making baby steps to make sure the dog fully understands the exercises before going on. I am not anti-correction at all... but I ain't hurting my elbows/wrists for any dog sport! :) I will always find a better alternative...
