I don't think it is a matter of 'taking the stick' with you on trial day, but getting him to understand, I mean REALLY understand where 'heel' is. And if that takes a stick or whatever, then fine, but he will ONLY get reward - bridge word - treat - whatever, when he is in correct HEEL position - that is either sitting or walking. I would do short heels with him (God, listen to me - the person that took a dog in an he wasn't at ALL heel trained! hahahha anyway, that was first for me and I won't EVER do that again!)... anyway, short heels; quarter and half turn heels - sit and walk to the side and heel - whatever - everything to show him that 'heel' means that his shoulder/neck is right next to your thigh - no matter what. At least that is how I have always worked it and even with the dog trained without a collar - heel was a position that was indisputable - when they are in it, the world is great - when not, then they are unhuh or grumbled at... eeeuuuuwwww bad place... anyway, the forging is simply an unsure thing... he is enthusiastic and he thinks if he can go a little ahead, he can change YOUR pace... you are moving at a fast pace with him already, right? Dobermans are awful at a slow pace... ugh... long strides at a good clip, otherwise they will try to hurry you along! hahhahaha
