my trainer had me try Free Will heeling. If you are going in an obedience ring this will work just fine, for me it did. Place a piece of hot dog in your left hand, let your dog see you do this and put your hand across your bely button then ask your dog to heel or just walk around a room till they come up on your left side then reward him with click and food or just good and food. then keep walking and reward as the dog comes up to our left side.
After a little when they "get it", then turn in towards the dog so that he has to run around you to get back to your left side, reward. Now when ever i walk around she runs to be and stay at my left side.
I tried the stick method with my last dobe and took days/weeks to train. this other method works in 10 minutes. Sorry about your arm and elbow it stinks gettin' old and injured.
