the malpractice insurance premiums are unbelievable! I know many docs that just pulled up stakes. We have like two pulmonologist in a town of over 300,000 people that serves an area of three times that many and basically, if you are on a ventilator, you are on cruise control! And one of them is leaving! It is bad, really bad. As far as scheduling, the docs don't schedule, but they do know they are over booked.. one reason is people don't show... if you book x number of patients and half of them don't show, then you are stuck with office time and no patients, then if you book and most of them show, odds are an emergency happens and you are called away and then have to try to play catch up - office patients bitch about it, but basically if it was THEM that was the emergency, would they want to wait until all the office patients were seen? hahahha so then the office patients are rescheduled into a schedule that was already booked up in the first place! I don't see much of a cure for what ails the healthcare system. Insurance companies basically have dictated what occurs and not the medical profession... that is why I didn't want to see insurance companies get into animals... but they did, so that system will have the same ills because it isn't going to be run by those in the system but those that control it... I am quickly becoming a proponent of socialized medicine and outlawing insurance companies! hahahha.... example: we had a lady come in the ER the other night. She had been release two days prior from the hospital and had prescriptions to fill - she went to the pharmacy to get them and they said she had to pay $500 or she couldn't get them - they were for a month - she asked if she could get one days worth and then get the money.. they refused.. so she didn't get her meds - she didn't get her lasix - a pill that is about as cheap as salt - so she ended up that night in the ER in fulmonating pulmonary edema - was unresponsive in the field and bagged and attempted to intubate as she was agonal... she, luckly, aroused and they kept bagging and got her to the ER. Her BP was 220/108 and she was diaphoretic and close to being intubated - we did a slew of stuff to keep her alive and did... likely the ER visit alone will be around $20K... not to mention going to the ICU from there... all for lack of a pill that would have cost pennies.... if her family hadn't found her and called EMS when they did - five or ten minutes later, she would be dead now... for pennies.... now it is thousands and they will say it is the doctors wanting money... no, the doctor treating her is going to a senate oversight committee this week to testify about this sort of crap! We see this sort of s**t all the time... we see a guy call EMS to bring him 30 miles because he has a sore throat... because he didn't have money for a taxi and didn't have a doctor... this cost taxpayers thousands of dollars AND took an emergency vehicle and trained crew out of availability for YOUR loved one having a real emergency...

ya got me started... sorry... my mother is a poet and she wrote a poem once that I read as a child and still recall the giest of ... it was about knocking down walls... about how you keep at it even though your knuckles were bloodied and sore, you keep at it and then jubilantly, it goes down only for you to find another wall behind it...
