In general, you should avoid any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), this includes asprin and ibuprofen. I also avoid decongestants because I have high blood pressure and decongestants can raise blood pressure. My doctor is OK with acetomenophen (Tylenol). I generally don't take combination cold medicines because they usually contain decongestants and/or NSAIDS. I have found I get some relief from zinc lozanges and if taken regularly from the beginning of the cold, generally the cold is shorter and less severe. It is always a good idea, however, to give your doctor a call before you use anything. The nurse at my doctor's office is good for this.
