>Hi Janet,
The best thing your nephew can do is live a good, healthy life (just like we all should). Eat a healthy, low sodium diet, drink lots of water, exercise, don't smoke, limit alcohol consumption, limit caffeine consumption, stay away from ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, etc. The safest pain med is tylenol, so try to avoid anything else.

There is really no way of predicting how many years a person can live with PKD before they experience problems. Some people live their whole life and never have problems from it. (It is sometimes noted on an autopsy report on an older person who never knew they had it!). Then of course, there are people who aren't as lucky and wind up in kidney failure. There is no way of predicting if and when this will happen. But, your niece and nephew have to be optimistic...medicine is improving every day. There may soon be a medication available to slow/stop the progress of this disease. And, as horrible as kidney failure may seem, thankfully, there are kidney transplants (or dialysis) which help the patient to live a great quality life. No one can predict what tomorrow will bring for any of us. The best advice I can give is to live each day, and try not to worry about the future, because honestly, there may not ever be anything for your niece/nephew to worry about. It would be sad to have wasted so much time worrying for nothing. Good luck to you and your family.
