My mother was on PD, and they insisted that my dad learn to operate the cycler and be able to do the exchange manally as well, in case my mother was ill or something. However, he really needs to ask. Also, some people are getting transplants now without ever being on dialysis - if they can get a relative to donate that matches, they don't have to wait on the list.
