It is possible. This is from the PKD Foundation's book "Q&A on PKD".
"In patients without ADPKD, the urinalysis and the urine culture usually demostrate evidence for infection when someone has a kidney infection. IN ADPKD, the source of the infection is most often the cysts in the kidney that no longer communicat with the collecting system or the urinary tract, When these become infected, there is no place for the bacteria to travel to in the urinary system, so it is infrequent that the urine culture is postive in patients with ADPKD who have a cyst infection. It is more likely that the bloodstream will have a positive culture than will the urine. Even so, iy id important to obtain a urine sample and test it for the presence of bacteria. If the bacteria is identified, it is most likely that the correct antibiotic will be chosen for the treatment of the infection."
You can buy the book for $10 or $15 from the PKD Foundation at http://www.pkdcure.org/aboutPkdBooks.htm
I really recommend it. It's one of the best sources I've found for questions on PKD.
