Please confide in someone she respects and the 2 of you confront her with medication and threapy to combat her depression. Please feel free to share my story.
When I was 10 (1973) I had a cyst removed from my kidney. The docs at the time told my mom that all would be fine.
Fast forward to 2004, I am 41, with 2 wonderful children, a great husband, a Masters degree and we are blessed with a strong faith. We were planning to move to a foreign country for my husbands job and I thought all would be lost, it was not. We have an awesome nephrologist, Michael Sutters @ Johns Hopkins Bayview.
I have many, many cysts on my kidney and liver. When I told my very close friends and family, I could not believe the supportive response.
My dearest friend lest me a message " I have 2, I only need 1." My sister, who is quite wimpy and 52 offered hers, and 2 other friends said the same.
I was scared, happy, sad, exhiliarated, and energized. I am continuing my workouts, no contact sports ( I was never good at that anyway), eat healthy....
At 17, she needs guidance and encouragement. Life is not over, persue your goals, I love many Biblical quotes for encouragement, But Nike Has a good one, too... Just do it!!
Please get her depression under control with therapy and meds, then goal setting. Nobody has perfect health, once you share, others will share, too. Group work may also be helpful. Try the support groups on the PKD website.
email me if you like. I am a guidance counselor.
Rita
