some research shows that birth control pills may increase liver cysts, but my neph has not had any difficulty with my taking birth control pills as far as my kidneys go. I might be concerned if my liver was particularly enlarged, but it is not, though I have some liver cysts. My neph says that the liver cysts are generally do not cause any problems and the liver continues to perform normally with them. I don't know about echinacea, but I am very cautious about any supplements since there is very little research about supplements and kidney effects. Personally, I take zinc lozenges when I feel a cold coming on, which has a local affect on the ability of the virus to affect the larynx, and I have good success in shortening the durantion and decreasing the severity of colds. However, the lozenges have a sour, metallic taste that makes me lose my appetite while I am using them (not always a bad thing). I am 47 years old and the only symptom that I have from my PKD is hypertension, which is well controlled on Cozaar and hydrochlorothiazide.
