Hi Lauren, I am 38 years old now but I was diagosed at 14 with PKD. Like you I had a love that I had to quit, it was football. I couldnt wait to be old enough to play foorball for my school. but 2 weeks into my first year I was dianosed. My doctors also told me to stop playing. The reason was that cysts in your kidneys could rupture and bleed with any strenuous activity. Once they bleed they could cause infections in the kidneys. I took my doctors advise. there were times where I did some heavy bike riding or just shoveling snow or raking leaves. With these activities I ruptured some cysts. When cysts rupture they grow back even bigger and can become painful just sitting inside yoru abdomen. At the time the cysts ruptured it caused tremendous pain and produced at times bright red urine. It is a decision you have to make on your own, but my advise is to listen to your doctor. Trust me I really didnt need all the pain and blood and if i played football who knows how bad it would have been.
I had a trasnplant 18 months ago and I feel great.
