ADPKD patients have a 0% chance of passing ARPKD (the childhood version) onto their children.

Yes, there is a 50% chance of passing it on. Yes, there are genetic tests they can do so you can have IVF & implant only the 'healthy' embryo. But to me, that is playing God. My parents didn't have that choice, why should I?

I think that as long as you are aware your children could have this disease, that is your biggest weapon. You can start them out eating right (low sodium, easy on the protein), exercising, getting enough rest, etc. This is all after the age of 2, you understand. Children smaller than that shouldn't be on any kind of restricted diet at all.

As for hypertension running in your family, I don't think that matters much. If your child has PKD, High Blood Pressure is one of the first signs/symptoms of the disease.

I was told to be checked for inheriting it from my father when I was 20. I'd say that's the rule of thumb for most families. They take an ultrasound so they can get a 'baseline' since the disease often doesn't noticeably progress until the patient is in their 50's.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
