Subject: Trevor was not making a joke. He was simply saying as you draw lines between us and them the area between lines gets smaller and smaller. And pretty soon even redheads become a minority of their own.
In reply to: Lance 's message, "I'm sure Trevor meant no offense to anyone. He's a real sweet heart and would never intentionally offend or insult anyone on this board and I'm sure he was as moved by Chris's post and Matthew Shepard's picture, as I was. *hugs everyone* I know that hate crimes are a difficult and emotional issue but lets all do the best we can and maybe we'll all learn something." on 04:56:59 06/11/03 Wed

I see this everyday. I work with handicapped children. While I applaud the extra effort the school makes with them I wish that my non handicapped child could get some of that largesse as well. This is what Trevor is trying to point out. Dividing an issue into us vs them, which I think is where John is coming from, doesn't tend make the problem heal any faster. It only singles out who "we" are and who "they" are.
Murder is already illegal so writing a law that says murdering a gay man/lesbian/any other minority is extra wrong is just ridiculous and a waste of paper. Hate crime legislation WON'T stop hate crimes kids.. any more than the death penalty stops murder. Where the effort needs to be improved in my humble opinion is in the enforcement and prosecution end of the spectrum. Not to make light of Matt Shepard but murder WAS ALREADY against the law in Wyoming. A Hate Crimes Law would not have changed that one bit. People who kill feel that they are in the right and are justified in doing so. They dont care that its illegal.. because the law was written for OTHER people not them.
Better enforcement and better education... but its just easier to ignore problems than work to solve them.
