Let me just start with this.

I believe more of an emphasis needs to be put on widespread education on issues surrounding anti-gay prejudice

It is idealistic and unrealistic. To me, i think itd be faster to turn on the "love gay button" in people's brain which doesnt really exist. If that actually works, KKK wouldn't be still everywhere. James Byrd incident in Texas would not have happend, now would it? You can't control people's thought, and you can't change it. You can only influence it and only when they want to be influence. Such as banning Guns. People argue, guns people kill people, people kill people. Well, you can't control people's thought, DON"T THINK ABOUT KILLING HIM. But what you can do is to lower the risk of it. A stab by knief in the non-critical part of body is less severe than a bullet shot. Or, I dont like certain someone..(someone we shall not be named..jsut say Mr. ASScroft..or one of the past governor of Texas), I hope he'd choke on donuts and die. They can't punish me for it because I am not stuffing him with donuts (not like he doenst do it himself enough).

People are rational and irrational. Crimes are done under irrational states. Thats true. But nothing is clear cut. The majority is in the middle grey area. With a hate crime bill, just might be able to scared the middle part enough for them not to do such thing based on bias. Even just one person, even it can save just one life. That bill still should be passed.
