concerning the reasons why some people always come out opposed to new laws for various things. there exists a particular strain of political thought that basically says, "you know what, we have enough laws...the federal government is doing things already that it has no business meddling in, and the benefit of a new law versus the diminution of our collective freedom by having yet another law on the books is just not worth it." this is a very fast and loose (from me, what did you expect ;)) libertarian POV, and not surprisingly, there are quite a few gay libertarians. It's a reaction to the stifling intrusion of the far right, w/o joining up with the gay movement on the left (which, by in large, is where the "movement" resides). so, the gay people who are uncomfortable w/ all the rest of the left, but feel unwelcome on the right are drawn very much by the "live and let live" philosophy of the libertarians. i'm not suggesting that they've come to it b/c it's a "do what you want" philosophy, but it fits more in line with their natural impulses than joining up with a particular strain of thought on the left with which they genuinely disagree on many issues.

point of this all is: not all gay people who oppose these new laws are doing so b/c they've begging for far right acceptance. nor are they all pawns of the religious-wrong brainwashing. they just genuinely have philosophical objections to new laws. i know it's frustrating and totally confounding for alot of people to wrap their brains around, but it's just another voice in our system of political diversity. and Diversity, as our recently indicted patron saint Martha is fond of saying, is a good thing.
