Subject: Bush Judicial Nominee Likens Gays To Pedophiles

(Washington, D.C.) A Bush nominee for a federal judgeship says homosexuality is comparable to incest, necrophilia, pedophilia, prostitution and adultery.

Alabama Attorney General William Pryor was nominated by the president to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

As Attorney General Pryor filed an amicus ("friend of the court") brief in the Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court case challenging Texas's sodomy law in which he made the comparisons.

He also argues in the brief that sodomy is a chosen behavior unworthy of constitutional protection, and fails to recognize GLBT individuals as people worthy of the same constitutional rights and protections that other Americans take for granted.

Two states joined Alabama's amicus brief in support of state sodomy laws. Nine states with such laws on their books did not file briefs to defend their laws.

LGBT rights groups including Log Cabins Republicans are calling for the White House to rescind the nomination. Senate confirmation hearings on Pryor's nomination began today.

"In reviewing the record of the nominee before us here today, I'm disappointed to say he looks more like the nine nominees I personally have voted against than the 119 I have voted for," said Charles Schumer, D-N.Y, in an opening salvo at the hearings.

"His views are an unfortunate stitching together of the worst parts of the most troubling judges we've seen thus far."

Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., suggested Pryor's position on gays is deeper than one brief. He asked about a rumor that Pryor and his family rescheduled a trip to Disney World to avoid "Gay Day," and Pryor acknowledged it was true.

"My wife and I have two daughters who at the time were six and four years old," Pryor said. "We made a value judgment."

Under Pryor's leadership, the state attorney general's website was linked to anti-GLBT groups, including the Family Research Council and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which regularly litigates cases against GLBT rights. In contrast, his website does not make any links to groups that supported GLBT civil rights.

"Mr. Pryor has spent his career opposing the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans. We are concerned that his profound prejudice will prevent him from making clear, unbiased decisions as a federal judge, and we strongly oppose his nomination," said Human Rights Campaign Political Director Winnie Stachelberg.

Stachelberg called on the Senate to reject the nomination.

"Mr. Pryor's remarks fly in the face of scientific and medical evidence, and common decency. He has used his position to marginalize and malign GLBT Americans. That kind of bias and blatant discrimination is not appropriate for someone assuming a lifetime appointment to a federal circuit court," said Stachelberg.
