May 28, 2003 -- THE NBC-owned cable channel Bravo is going "The Bachelor" one better -launching a gay-version of the dating show.
There's just one twist, some of the 15 potential dates are straight.

Like "Bachelor," "Boy Meets Boy" will feature an eligible bachelor looking for love among a group of 15 hopefuls - in this case, all males.

"This is going to blur the boundaries of what is thought to be straight and what is thought to be gay in this country," said, Scott Seomin, a spokesman for The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

At least one heterosexual suitor will be revealed to viewers when the show begins. The identities of the other straight men will be kept secret until midway through the series.

"Straight guys and viewers will discover what it's like to be in the closet," said Seomin.

"Only reality television could create a closet for straight men," The revelation will "challenge preconceived notions of what is considered gay and straight behavior," according to network officials.

Sources close to the show promise that there'll be other "twists" as well.

"The idea is for the audience to follow two basic storylines," said supervising producer, Kirk Marcolina. "One is that of our leading man, a gay man looking for a romantic connection. And the second is following the straight man's journey and what it's like to live in the gay world for a week - for them to walk a mile in a gay man's shoes."

The show was filmed in two luxurious homes in Palm Springs, Calif. earlier this month.

The bachelor has been identified as a 32-year-old from southern California who works in the human resources division of a large law firm.

On the six-episode series - slated to debut in July though no specific date has been announced - the bachelor will go out with the other men in both one-on-one and group dates.

At the end of each episode, he'll eliminate suitors - with the aid and advice of his best, female friend who was on hand throughout the shooting - until one is left.

"Because of that twist, the show is going to be talked about more - and there's going to be more straight viewers," said Seomin.

"Gays do not necessarily have to be protected from reality-dating show twists," says Seomin. "Right now, from 'The Bachelor' to 'Joe Millionaire,' when you go on a dating show that's going to be broadcast on television, you have to expect a twist or two.

"In the future, we're hoping to see 'Girl Meets Girl,' 'Bisexual Meets Boy and Girl,' " Seomin joked.

"Boy" will be hosted by Dani Behr
