(Los Angeles, California) Los Angeles city council has voted to support a bill before the California Assembly that would give domestic partners and their families many of the same rights and benefits as married couples.

Following a unanimous vote by council the motion was signed by Monday by Mayor Jim Hahn, citing the city's "proud history" of supporting domestic partner rights.

Los Angeles becomes the 7th city in the state to endorse the bill authored by Jackie Goldberg, D-Los Angeles.

Last week the city of Davis passed a similar motion. The other cities are San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Berkeley, West Hollywood and Santa Monica.

"This legislation would further reinforce this commitment and make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of men and women in the city and throughout the state," Hahn said.

There are roughly 400,000 Californians in same-sex relationships who don't have the same benefits as married couples.

The bill would guarantee both partners in a domestic partnership child custody and visitation rights along with a duty to financially support children.

It would provide for bereavement leave, family care and medical leave already guaranteed married couples, and it would provide for coverage under a partners' medical, dental, life and disability insurance.

The legislation would also guarantee pension rights and death benefits for surviving partners of firefighters and police officers.

It allows for the joint filing of state income tax returns and for benefits, such as workers' compensation and public assistance.

A vote on the legislation is expected sometime this week in the state Assembly.
