(Buenos Aires) Laws recognizing same-sex domestic partnerships have gone into effect in two states in Argentina. The city state of Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital, and the state of Río Negro passed the legislation earlier this year (story)
Under the new laws, passed separately in each state, same-sex couples who can prove they have lived together for at least two years may share labor and social security benefits. They will also be able to claim leave when a partner is sick, and enter into agreements, such as buying a house, as if they were married.
The new rights make the states the first areas in Latin America to recognize same-sex civil unions.
At the time the law was passed in Buenos Aires, congressman Héctor Costanzo said it was a major step in Argentina becoming a " tolerant society, based on the dignity of all people, without distinctions."
"This is of the most importance because we can only achieve true democracy with the effective application of human and civil rights across the board," Costanzo said.
Wednesday, the president of the Argentine Homosexual Community Cesar Cigliutti applauded the measure as a victory for same-sex couples and said he now intends to campaign for its introduction at national level.
