(Lansing, Michigan) A Detroit Democrat has announced legislation to end the state's ban on gay and lesbian sex.

State Rep. Steve Tobocman called the Gross Indecency Law an anachronism. Under the law Gross indecency statutes punish adult, consensual, noncommercial sex as a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Michigan's largest LGBT rights organization, the Triangle Foundation in Detroit welcomed the news.

Sean Kosofsky, Triangle's policy director said dozens of men are arrested a year for gross indecency. While most people charged under the law don't typically serve jail time, they pay high fees and are on the state sex offender registry.

Tobocman has also introduced legislation that would repeal laws which prohibit cursing, blasphemy and cohabitation.

The bills have been referred to the House Criminal Justice Committee.
