Gay Republicans Want Closure On Santorum

(Washington, D.C.) Gay Republicans held their annual convention in Washington this weekend attracting a record 200 people but it was hard finding anyone willing to talk about Sen Rick Santorum (R Pennsylvania) or his recent attack on gays.'

Leadership of the Log Cabin Republicans say it is time to move on, despite the outrage of gays across the country over Santorum's homophobic rhetoric (story).

The Santorum issue has dogged the party and specifically Log Cabin Republicans ever since his now infamous interview with the Associated Press in which he compared homosexuality with incest, polygamy and adultery.

On Friday LCR members met for more than an hour with three White House officials, but as an indication of the clout the organization has, the meeting did not take place in the White House and had only one ranking member of the administration.

Joseph O'Neill, the White House AIDS czar, Brett Kavanaugh, associate White House counsel, and Holly Kuzmich, associate director of the White House domestic policy council met with the group in the Old Executive Office Building.

Senator Santorum's name did not come up in the meeting.

No discussion of Santorum was necessary said Patrick Guerriero, LCR's executive director. "The core of the Republican Party, from the White House to Congress, understands that we're an important part of the American family."

Still, Guerriero said the Log Cabin Republicans believe the White House could have distanced itself further from the Santorum controversy.

"If we were completely satisfied that the Republican Party was as inclusive as we wished, we would cease to exist," Guerriero said. "It's obvious that the issue of inclusiveness in the Republican Party is going to be a major issue."

The session was devoted to education, judicial nominees and AIDS.

AIDS Czar O'Neill was the only openly gay member of the administration at the meeting. Dr. O'Neill told the group that the White House was "the most wonderful working environment that he had ever worked in."
