Somehow I made it onto the Democrat mailing list and got this alert. As there still is no Senator (or any other constitutional representation) for countries of which Bush claims to be the leader I can only post it here.

Anti-choice Senate leaders won't take "No" for an answer. Conservative Senators are forcing a vote on Priscilla Owen's controversial nomination for Thursday morning.

To call your Senators directly, dial 202-224-3121 for the Capitol Switchboard. Anti-choice Senators need 60 votes to force a floor vote on Owen's nomination.

Last year, the Senate Judiciary Committee rejected Priscilla Owen's nomination to the federal judiciary. In a controversial and unprecedented move, President Bush re-nominated Owen after Republicans took control of the Senate after the 2002 elections.

- If Priscilla Owen is approved to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, it's highly likely she would vote to restrict a woman's right to choose. At this court level, any decisions regarding the right to choose could severely undermine the legal foundation of Roe v. Wade.

- Priscilla Owen is a conservative judicial activist. She rewrites the law from the bench to reflect her personal views - including her opposition to freedom of choice. Those who know Owen best confirm this view. Nineteen Texas civil rights, women's rights, labor, and consumer groups joined together to oppose the Owen nomination, saying "Justice Owen is an ideological activist whose rulings often favor corporations or government at the expense of ordinary Texans."

- President Bush is working to pack the courts with right-wing judicial activists who will reverse decades of progress in protecting Americans' rights. Priscilla Owen's nomination is part of the Administration's anti-choice strategy, and her confirmation would be a major victory for anti-choice leaders.
