  • Almost Dead -- Ashley D, 21:53:55 07/08/10 Sat
Well, it appears that it is time to shut the place down. It has been 9 years since I started this place and so many have left and gone their own ways, there are about 3 people left that have posted here that I still keep in contact with.
It is rather sad that so many of the "friends" I had on here have drifted away from me and most just suddenly STOPPED being friends and confidants but I guess that is the net.

I will leave this until the end of 2010 and then I will close the place down for the VERY last time.

  • Meggase from Grasshopper to all hsi friends -- timmy, 19:45:04 13/05/05 Fri
I received this letter from Grasshopper last night, on the 12th April 2005. I was too surprised, then, to do what he asked and post it yesterday, so here it is now. It is sad but happy to say that Grasshopper is leaving us. I have been honoured and thrilled to have been a confidant, adviser, and friend. He has decided to leave us his stories and I invite you to join with me in wishing him well and a happy journey. Regrettably there will be no e-mail or other way to contact him, but I'd think he will enjoy seeing nice remarks on the message board from time to time. I'm going to miss him a lot.

He says (and it was addressed to me, but I have changed it to be to you all):

    Dear Friends,

I have the BIGGEST news !! I am really excited right now. You know how everybody always kids me about being a real cowboy? Well, I think I'm gonna be one now

My uncle has asked my daddy to come help him run the ranch out west. I've been there and it's wonderful, but I never dreamed I'd get to live there Daddy said that he has asked him before, but until the storms last year, we were doing okay. Now, it seems like the perfect plan. Mama and Daddy were worried that I'd be upset, but I really am excited. We have been talking about this for months and after Daddy's illness we decided to go and so now we are. This is the last time I'll see you here for a long while cause we leave next week. Our farm finally sold.

I'm feeling all kinds of ways; happy, excited, and a little sad. My uncle needs my daddy's help and Daddy says he needs mine We have so much to do when we get out there. The house we will have is kinda old, but Mama says it will be cool. I get the attic Grandmom will get to be with her other grandkids too.

I'll be sorry that I have to leave here, but I must help my family, and it will be such a great adventure; new animals, new country, lots of things to do and see. We sure don't want to wait to see what the hurricanes do this summer, right?

I want to thank all of my friends and people who have loved my stories and for all their kind words. It has meant a lot to me. I know there's been some yuck too and with everything going on with me I need to go badly okay? Even though I won't be here anymore my stories will and that makes me smile.

    Super {{hugs}}
    Grasshopper

  • Santa's Bad Day -- Rick, 02:06:22 19/12/04 Sun
    Santa's Bad Day
    The Birth of a Tradition

One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More stress.
Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked, and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys.

So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hidden the liquor, and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider pot, and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw end of the broom. Just then the doorbell rang, and irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?"
Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.

The keys that open friendship's door
Are in your hands and mine
    There's a key called understanding
    Fashioned from a rare design;
    For this quiet understanding
That is passed from friend to friend
Is what makes a pleasant friendship
    Keep blooming with no end.

    There's another key most precious
    That can open friendship's door;
It's called love and we must use it
    Each day, more and more
For if we give ourselves all freely
    Ever seeking for the best
Being blind to faults of others
    Then true friendship's been expressed.

As incredible as it may seem, this is only my first time here. Even after seeing the link to here for as many times as I've been to "A Place of Safety", I only just now actually clicked on it.

I knew immediately I'd like it here as soon as I heard that music. Although it's probably already been done in the past, I thought I'd post the words for that song here (which, of course, is "Ben", a hit in 1972 for a then 14 year old Michael Jackson), in hopes that the beautiful and loving sentiments the song expresses will inspire happy and positive thoughts in anybody who may happen to be reading this posting (especially those who, like me, have found themselves wandering here, perhaps also for the first time):

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
    I'll never be alone
And you my friend will see
You've got a friend in me

Ben, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
    If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
    There's something you should know
You've got a place to go

    I used to say
    I and me
    Now it's us
    Now it's we
    I used to say
    I and me
    Now it's us
    Now it's we

Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
    I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben
    Like Ben
    Like Ben

That never fails to get me all choked up.

Ashley, from what I've seen of it so far, this is a most wonderful sight! I must tell you I roared with laughter at that animation of a mouse using a "man" with his computer! Anyway, thanks again for this site! Be happy and be well; and all my best to the "'Roos".

    {{{hugs}}}

I need to know if you’re my true friend,
will you be by my side until the end?
Can I tell you my secrets deep,
and trust them in your heart you’ll keep?
We are neither of us without our flaws,
can you accept mine as I will yours?
I’ll be a shoulder to cry on when you’re blue,
will you be there for me when I need you?
No matter how busy I will make time for you,
if you are busy will you make time for me too?
I will take your hand and comfort your tears,
will you hold me and soothe my fears?
I will give you joy and many warm smiles,
can we share that even across many miles?
I will not forget what’s important to you,
will you remember what’s important to me too?
With you my most favourite things I’ll share,
If only I know do you truly care?
If you can accept me as I do you,
then I will know you are a friend most true.

  • Help Wanted -- Christian, 05:00:44 26/07/03 Sat
    Hi guys,

I'm planning an event to raise money for research on HIV. The core of the event is a bicycle ride across Canada, from St.John NFL to Victoria BC, a minimum distance of 7000 Km, to be held in 2006, coinciding with the Gay Olympics Games in Montreal. I would like to find contacts in all provinces and territories. Altho we may not be able to ride up North due to lack of roads, I would like participants from these regions.

If you live in Canada, and are interested in helping set this up, please write to me with the mention 'Cross-Canada Bicycle Ride' in order to get the first draft of the project.

If you have contacts with Canadians, please forward this text to them along with the appropriate email:

    thrse.lamontagne@sympatico.ca

The more names I have on my list, the greater the credibility this idea will have, and the greater the amount of money we will be able to raise.

    Christian

P.S. Feel free to send this plea to other message boards and to mail lists. Thanks.

    Chris.

  • Netscape, and alternative Browsers, as opposed to Internet Explorer -- Warren C. E. Austin, 07:28:52 29/06/03 Sun
    Ashley

Information, I thought both you and your visitors, might wish to receive.

With Netscape Communication Corporation's "load-balance" testing early this week of their FTP-Servers, and their, as a consequence having made available a preview release of Netscape 7.1, I feel it somewhat politic to revisit a topic I've addressed before, some months ago.

There is a World-wide technological revolution under way, one which unfortunately does not include adopters of Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Any recommendations I make here regarding one Browsing Technology, over any other, are not intended to foster debate of Microsoft, nor its' products, especially Internet Explorer, but has more to do with emerging trends which will have a profound effect our abilities to access and assimilate information through the media of the Internet.

The harsh reality of it all, and one only now being recognized by Microsoft in particular, and a host of others who have sought to control our access, is that Microsoft, and these others do not dictate the terms of how information is, will be, and should be transferred amongst us.

The World Wide Web Consortium ["W3C Org" for short and to be found here: http://www.w3.org/ ], dictates those terms setting the standards that everyone who uses the Internet must adhere to, with Microsoft, and others being simply member components of that organization.

Microsoft recently publicly announced there will be no further "stand-alone" Internet Explorer releases. Version 6 SP1 is all she wrote folks. And further enhancements to the technology will likely only now ever be made through the auspices of their Windows Operating System. That they had previously integrated Internet Explorer into their Windows OS was, and still is, as many of you here may be aware, the subject of a massive legal battle in the U. S. these past couple of years.

So what alternatives are you and I, the end-user, going to have made available to us in lieu of Internet Explorer, and Microsoft's decision to freeze its' development. There are several, each with their own specific strengths and weaknesses, with ALL BUT ONE complying with the standards as set out and proscribed by W3C Org. The one remaining hold out, is ironically enough Microsoft, and their imbedded Internet Explorer technologies.

Given recent announcements at Netscape Communication Corporation, and its' parent company AOL/Time-Warner, it's not known at the present time whether further development upon the Netscape Browser Suite will be undertaken. What is now known, and will be readily apparent to all any of you that do download, and install the "new" Netscape 7.1 when the FTP-Servers are opened to the general public, probably sometime next week, is that long awaited change has finally come; if for no other reason than its' "newly instituted" dynamic and astoundingly awesome "Junk-mail and SPAM" filtering capabilities, whereby the Browser Suite is now capable of "learning" your e-Mail behaviour and handling your incoming e-Mail accordingly. With the release of Netscape 7.1, Netcape, and Mozilla have matured beyond belief, and do really and truly deserve your taking a first, if not second look. There are so many desirable, and needed features, to be found within the structure of the Netscape/Mozilla Browsers, so many in truth, that I cannot name them all; but, other than the "Junk e-Mail" filtering, alluded to above, there are discrete "text" and "image" on-the-fly re-sizing capability; a fully customizable User-interface, whereby each and every element of what you see on your screen may be determined, not by others, but by you the end-user, as you are using it. Gone forever is the era of unauthorized "pushed" content, and "pop-up" windows; making it's first appearance in 10-years, is the ability to surf in "text-only" mode which dramatically reduces screen-viewing time, especially when searching for information, and not simply, and idly surfing, or browsing. Gone forever, too, are the days of undesired advertising, with the end-user now able to control, all, or any, advertising which may appear on the screen. In addition e-Mail encryption is now a seemless, and easily integrated function of the Browser Suite.

Those interested will find the U. S. English-language version of the Netscape Browser Suite here:

    [ ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.1/windows/win32/sea/NSSetupB.exe ]

This above link is for the "full" stand-alone archive with built-in installer, and will be in the neighbourhood of a 30 Mb download. For those with a standard Dial-up, and not wanting to dedicate the resources necessary to download a file of that size, the Internet installer will be found here:

    [ ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.1/windows/win32/NSSetup.exe ]

Other language versions will be made available too, with them being added one at a time shortly after the "official" release of the U. S. English-language version, and will be found here:

    [ ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/ ]

In addition, whether Netscape continues the development of their "Branded" Browser, or not, the Open-source Community, the life blood behind the "Mozilla Project", and the parent to the Browser being marketed under the Netscape name, will continue its' work and enhancements to the "Gecko Rendering Engine" is assured. This same technology is currently featured in a goodly number of other alternative Browsers, information about which will be found here:

The most significant of these being Beonix, Firebird (previously known as Phoenix), Thunderbird, Camino (formerly known as Chimera), K-Melon, Skipstone, and of course Mozilla, the grand-daddy of them all, itself.

Opera Software Corporation, a small all most unknown company, based in Norway is doing remarkable things with their entry into the alternative Browser field, and it, too, is worth taking a look at. You'll find more information here:

What does the future hold for Internet Explorer? At this juncture, no-one (other than maybe Microsoft itself) knows. What is known is that the Internet Explorer (and Outlook, Outlook Express, et al) technologies are non-compliant, and will not in future be tolerated by the web-community, especially they interfere with the free access by all, to information, and services.

Microsoft and AOL/Time-Warner recently settled their long running dispute over AOL's access to Microsoft's technology, and it remains to be seen whether the "Gecko Rendering Engine" makes an appearance in the Windows Operating System sometime within the next few years; or whether Microsoft will attempt to stand alone in the face of the World's disaffection with any entities monopolistic behaviour.

In the mean time, for continued assurance of your "privacy", and the security and integrity of your computing environment, I suggest you consider one of the alternative now available.

I know you won't read this for awhile, but wanted you to know that you are far from forgotten. We are missing you, praying for you, and wishing you the best. I know that, given time, you will find peace, and that will ultimately lead you to joy. Some days I wish I had your strength. You may not think you are strong, but I know you are, and your beautiful spirit will prevail in the end.

  • Message for Ashley -- Simon Reynolds on behalf of Patrick Braithwaite, 19:13:06 12/07/03 Sat
    Hello, mate!

If you get this message, Ashley, it's because someone - probably Josh, was able to find a way of getting it to you for me, but only because circumstances have prevented my doing that myself.

Ashley, I am so sorry that I never had the opportunity to talk to you very often, but please know that I thought of you a lot while you were away. I know you have a great many friends who love you so very much and I like to think I'm not being presumptive in counting myself among them.

I never told you I was ill. In fact, I never told anyone until a short time ago. I hope you won't think bad of me for not sharing the news with you, but I figured you had enough on your plate and a dumb Irishman adding more grief was the last thing you would want.

Everyone tells me that Ashley is one of the sweetest, kindest, most beautiful souls God ever saw fit to place on the Earth. They don't need to tell me, I already know that and I know, too, that when you return to those friends there will be much joy, not just on Earth but also in Heaven, for I shall be there looking down and joining in the party.

Ashley, my friend, take each day as it comes and remember those who hold you dear in your heart and head always.

Your parents have made me smile, too, by keeping me updated on your progress, it always made me smile to know how well you were doing.

You're a good bloke, Ashley. Keep smiling.

    Patrick

  • God's Angels -- Rick, 14:48:52 12/07/03 Sat
    Every now and then God
calls his Angels Home to help
him with his special jobs .

    Once again he needed someone
special to help him with a task .
    Sometimes its hard to understand
why God does this but then he sends
us a sign and at that moment . We
understand why , the pain is still
there but we do understand and
we give a little smile and we go on .

A few days ago God called my friend
Patrick home . I know in my heart
that God has a special task in Heaven
for my friend , just like he had on earth .
Making Heaven a much happier place to
be for all of God's angels .

Patrick ... keep smiling my friend .
Thanks for my sign , I got it today .
Thanks for showing me that everything
    will be alright .

  • Morning Prayer -- Rick, 12:51:09 05/07/03 Sat
    Morning Prayer

You are ushering in another day
    untouched and freshly new,
so here I come to ask You, God
    if You renew me too?

    Forgive the many errors,
    that I made yesterday,
and let me try again, dear God
to walk close in Thy Way.

But Father, I am well aware
I can't make it on my own,
so take my hand and hold it tight,
    for I can't walk alone.

    AMEN

  • There's A Hero -- Rick, 13:33:10 02/06/03 Mon
    by: Billy Gilman

There's a flower in the smallest garden
    Reaching for the light
There's a candle in the darkest corner
    Conquering the night
There is amazing strength In a willing hand
    There are victories
    That you've never planned
    There's a hero
    In everybody's heart

There's a fire inside of everybody
    Burning clear & bright
There's a power in the faintest heartbeat
    That cannot be denied
    Go on and trust yourself
    You can ride the wind
    You're gonna take your dreams
    Where they've never been
    There's a hero In everybody's heart

    Go on and trust yourself
    You can ride the wind
    You're gonna take your dreams
    Where they've never been
    There's a hero In everybody's heart
    There's a hero In everybody's heart

Hi my friend .. I found the words to this today and I thought of you ... take care of yourself ..

  • Dano, et al -- Warren C. E. Austin, 06:53:00 18/05/03 Sun
There are countless numbers of individuals, who just like yourself, have been touched through unfathomable means by the remarkable Ashley.

Your well-wishes, and those of all others, have been noted I'm sure, with Ashley at this very moment probably shaking his head in merriment at the fuss being made of his hospitalization.

I'm here to say that the FUSS is worth every moment of it!

"Who am I", you will ask?

I'm simply just another of the many casualties of the cyber-world; one who is crawling back from the brink of his own near self-destruction. Blessedly I am another of Ashley's causes, and find myself living in abject terror of ever again meeting one of his 'Roos as they make their global rounds dispensing care, compassion, and on very rare occasions, a good swift kick in the behind. One learns very quickly, after just one encounter, to not argue with the likes of a Uzi-toting 7-foot, 600-pound, "Joey" charged with Ashley's mission to bring his flock of the dispossessed to heel.

The Internet would be a far better (and safer) place with more individuals like Ashley, and the likes of those who inhabit his world, either here at "Ashley's Place", at "Rick's World" or through "A Place of Safety".

He is missed by all - both the several handfuls of those visible (and often erstwhile contributors), and the many hundreds residing in the shadows, who are seldom ever acknowledged.

Our one hope must be that Ashley will return to us, emotionally healthier, and physically stronger; a circumstance that must prevail in order that he might better serve his oftentimes ailing and troubled flock of admirers.

It behoves us all to take heed of his needs and to, in turn, become healthier and stronger in of our own selves whilst he is away, so that upon his return we may all rejoice in a combined sound and trouble-free future.

  • Imagine...... -- Rick, 13:24:20 18/06/03 Wed
    Imagine, for a moment,
    that peace befell the land
that all of humankind reached out
    and held each other's hand.

    Imagine, for an instant,
the touch of skin to skin
    proved so powerful a feeling
    every nation felt like kin.

    Imagine, for a second,
    love possessed the honest soul
of each citizen on the planet
and the world was truly whole.

    Imagine, for a heartbeat,
    how quickly hatred would dissolve
    and compassion rise up gallantly
    with blazing-strong resolve.

    Imagine, in your lifetime,
    this chain of hope began
and the link at its inception
    was your firm, extended hand.

    Imagine......

  • "Friends Without Faces" -- Rick, 12:30:11 30/05/03 Fri

We sit and we type and we stare at our screens,
We can't help but wonder what all of this means.
With mouse in hand ...we roam through this maze,
On an infinite search...lost in a daze.

We chat with each other, we type all our woes
At times we'll band together to gang up on our foes.
We wait for somebody, to type out our name
We want recognition, but it is always the same.

Soon friendships are formed - but - why we don't know,
But some of these friendships, will flourish and grow.
We give kisses and hugs, and sometimes we'll flirt,
In IMs we chat deeply, and reveal why we hurt.

Why is it on screen, we are so easily bold,
Telling our secrets, that have never been told.
The answer is simple, it is as clear as a bell,
We all have our problems, and need someone to tell.

We can't tell real people, but tell someone we must
So we turn to our 'puters ...and to those we can trust.
Even though it sounds crazy...the truth still remains,
Most of my "friends" have no faces
    ...and odd little names.
